I'm excited to share my latest DIY project with you!
I've seen some cool chandelier rescues out in blog land, and have been wanting to try it myself!
Last week I took my frist trip to a thrift store in almost 4 months *gasp!* and found THIS beauty:
Isn't it GREAT?! I was SO excited! I probably looked like a crazy lady hauling this huge light fixture through the store, and towing two little ones with me. This chandelier is pretty big; 10 lights.
The steps I took to a girlie chandelier:
- Do a "Pre Install" to make sure the fixture works! You don't want to spend time fixing it up if it doesn't work! Light fixtures bought at a thrift store are always a gamble!
- After you make sure it will work......Remove the white covers
- Tape over where the electrical stuff is:
- Prime your chandelier (I chose Krylon primer. Any primer will do)
- Spray paint it. I went with Krylon's Ivory
- I then painted the white light covers (Krylon Ballet Slipper)
- Make a cord cover to hide the top of the cord
- Reassemble the chandelier with the white covers, and cloth cord cover
- I'm LOVING the contrast between the ivory chandelier, and the girlie pink light covers!
- I also loooove the feminine details of this chandelier....so many swirlies
- Here it is, hanging up in Miss J's room
- I liked it, but thought it was still missing something.....Crystals! This thing needed some bling :)
- Miss J really likes her "fancy lights" as she calls them.
Just another BEFORE
and AFTER

ReplyDeleteGreat job! That turned out adorable. Perfect for a girl's room!
ReplyDeleteSarah, this is the sweetest chandelier! It turned out absolutely adorable!! Great job!
ReplyDeleteSarah - adorable chandy! What a wonderful job! It looks like Krylon is expanding their color line a little more to include softer hues like "Ivory" and "Ballet Slipper"? Love that. They used to make "Tidepool" which was a soft aqua which I used quite often around here.....til they stopped production of it. Ugh!
ReplyDeleteAnyway, beautiful work!

ReplyDeleteThank you for participating in the Therapy Session with Life in the Pitts!
That is absolutely gorgeous! I've been looking for something similar for my bedroom makeover. I need to go back to the thrift store!
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend! La
Wonderful makeover!! Looks very chic!
ReplyDeleteIt looks gorgeous! I love the crystals as some added girly fun! I'd love to try this one day!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous! I just bought a very similar chandelier (same exact design but only 5 lights) and just finished priming and painting it white tonight! That's a great idea to paint the white candle-holder thingies a contrasting color! I was looking for some mini lampshade covers (haven't found any yet) and was going to wrap them in some contrasting fabric, but I like how yours looks without the lampshades! I'll bet your daughter loves the "fancy" lights in her room! Very Diva-ish!
ReplyDeleteOkay, I checked my chandelier this morning and was very disappointed. Not sure what I did wrong. I used glossy paint, but it still came out kinda matte with a gritty texture. I resanded and just put another coat on. We'll see how that turns out, I guess.
ReplyDeletePaula,
ReplyDeleteThanks for your wonderful comments! I'm excited for you to try this too! Sorry that the paint didn't turn out as expected. I would try a fine grit sandpaper. Did you prime it first? You could try priming, then sanding, then painting. Hopefully it turns out beautiful! What color are you doing? I would love to see finished pictures!
Sarah
Hi, Sarah! I did prime...actually two coats. Yesterday, I did sand with fine grit sandpaper and repaint. It did come out better...although not as smooth and glossy as I'd hoped. I painted it white and think I'm going to paint the candlesticks pale purple after seeing how you painted yours pink. I have been unable to find mini lampshades (at a reasonable price) and I like how yours turned out without anyway.
ReplyDeleteI liked the green painter's tape you used and thought that color looked pretty with your white and pink...almost like leaves on a flower or something. Wouldn't that be pretty to find a way to make some kind of petals?
When I get it done, I'll post pics on Flickr or Facebook. :) Thanks for your reply! I'm really enjoying your blog and have subscribed!
Hi Sarah
